A file that actually prints well

3D modeling and DfAM

A model that looks right on screen can still fail on the machine. We prepare the CAD so the part comes out strong, closed and assemblable.

CAD modeling of a freeform surface prepared for 3D printing
RICREO · FDMSavona · IT

We work in Fusion 360, Rhino and Blender. We start from an idea, a dimensioned drawing or a file that needs cleanup, and we deliver a closed model ready for STL or 3MF.

Design for additive manufacturing, for us, is concrete: wall thickness, orientation, bridges, threads with clearance and areas that must carry a load. The file is made to be printed in FDM, not only to be looked at.

From sketch to file

  • 01

    Closed, printable geometry

We remove open surfaces, walls thinner than the nozzle and details the machine cannot hold.

  • 02

    Strength where it matters

We orient ribs and shells to the load, not to the most convenient view.

  • 03

    From concept to file

If you do not have a model, we build it and deliver it in the formats you need.

  • 04

    Same team as production

The people who model know the machines that will print the part.

Applications

3D modeling for printing: what we do

  • From sketch to CAD

An idea or a hand drawing becomes a closed model, ready to print.

  • Cleanup of existing files

Open surfaces, sub-nozzle walls and broken meshes fixed before printing.

  • Optimization for the run

Orientation, ribs and light weighting designed to cut machine time and rejects across the batch.

  • Models from measured dimensions

We rebuild the part from a dimensioned drawing or from the measurements of an original.

Process

How we work

  1. 01

    Technical brief

Part use, loads, environment and assembly constraints.

  2. 02

    Model

We build or clean the CAD, with a review pass together with you.

  3. 03

    FDM preparation

Walls, draft where it helps, holes and fit clearances.

  4. 04

    File or print

We deliver the model, or we print it directly at RICREO.

FAQ

3D modeling: common questions

01What is design for additive manufacturing (DfAM)?

It is designing a part for 3D printing: wall thickness, orientation, overhangs, bridges, holes and threads with the right clearance. A model designed this way comes out stronger and needs less machine time.

02Can you start from a sketch or a technical drawing?

Yes. We start from an idea, a dimensioned drawing or a file that needs cleanup. We do a review pass with you before delivering the model.

03Which modeling software do you use?

We work in Fusion 360, Rhino and Blender, chosen for the part: parametric CAD for mechanics, freeform surfaces for organic shapes.

04Which format do you deliver the model in?

We deliver a closed model ready for STL or 3MF and, if you need them, in other agreed formats. Alternatively we print it ourselves.

Ready to send the file?

We model and prepare geometry for FDM: wall thickness, overhangs, holes and strength.
